Among telecommunication cables are telephone cables, cables for outdoor networks as well as telecom cables.
- telephone cables: these cables are often protected with one or several tapes in water repellent synthetic material (film) for cables of over 4 pairs as well as a shield made of an aluminium polyester tape lengthwise applied.
- Cables for outdoor networks
- Copper cables for telecommunications: these cables are mainly made of water repellent synthetic tapes.
- copper cables for consumer networks: for land cables, assembling is maintained by one or several water repellent synthetic tapes that are applied length wise or in spiral.
- Optical fiber cables: in the building and operation of telecommunication networks the optical fiber brings several advantages: high transmission capacity, small diameter cables, lightness, flexibility, strength, lower application and assembling costs, immunity to electromagnetic turbulences, no interference between parallel links (cross-talk), very reduced attenuation enabling several tenths of kilometres without amplifier, easy cabling of a large conductor number. According to manufacturers the structures are different but in all buried or overhead optical cables is to be found at least one swelling tape being the sealing element.
- Bus cables:
- LF cables with symmetrical and quad pairs. The assembling is made in pairs with polyester tape.
- HF cables with symmetrical pairs: in addition to the assembling in pairs with polyester tape, each pair is protected with an individual shield. The shield is made of an alu/pet/alu tape in contact with a bonding wire. A general shield is also applied (alu/pet/alu tape in contact with a bonding wire) together with polyester tape before the external PVC sleeve.
- HF cable with quads. Assembling according to types with polyester or polypropylene tapes, then buffer stage in polypropylene and a general shield in aluminium/polyester with a bonding wire.
- Coaxial cables: an aluminium/polyester shield is generally used for this type of cable.
